Indian Railways locomotives are classified on the basis of their track gauge, motive power, suitable work , their power or model number. The name includes the information about the locomotive. The first letter stand for the track gauge. The second letter refer to the motive power (Diesel or Electric) and the third letter refers to the type of service they are suitable for (goods, passenger, mixed or shunting). The fourth letter used to denote locomotives chronological model number. A locomotive also may have a fifth letter in its name which generally denotes a technical variant or subclass or sub type. Fifth letter may defines the horsepower indication or the generation / Series of a Locomotive.
The first letter is for gauge
W – Indian broad gauge ( 5 ft 6 in)
Y – metre gauge (3 ft or 100 0mm)
Z – narrow gauge(2 ft 6 in)
N – narrow gauge (2 ft)
The second letter for motive power
D – diesel
C – DC electric
A – AC electric
CA – both DC and AC
B – Battery electric locomotive (rare)
The third letter for the job type
G – goods
P – passenger
M – mixed; both goods and passenger
S – shunting
U – electric multiple unit
R – Railcars

Indian Railways operates number of different types of coaches. It provides different arrangement of Seating or Berth depending on class of travel. IR primarily has two types of Coaches ICF (Integral Coach Factory) Coach and LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) Coach with multiple manufacturing facilities across India. IRS Coaches are presently used in Toy Trains such as Darjeeling Mountain Railways.
