Classification of Coaches

 

 

Passenger coaches in India are classified upon their travel class. Below are the classes accommodated in IR normal operation. 

 

  • Saloon: Luxury hotel rooms environment with living room, two bedrooms with bath and a well-equipped kitchen.

 

  • 1A, AC first class: It has eight cabins (including two coupes) in full AC first class coach and three cabins (including one coupe) in the half AC first class coach. Compartment have 2 berths (1 lower + 1 upper) are called coupe and compartments with 4 berths (2 lower + 2 upper) are called cabin.

 

  • 2A, AC two tier: An ICF coach can carry 46 passenger and LHB capacity is 54 passenger.

 

  • 3A , AC three tier: ICF has 64 Sleeping berth and LHB has 72 berths. 

 

  • 3E  AC three tier: It has capacity of carrying 78 passenger. Primarily used in Garib Rath Express.

 

  • EA, Anubhuthi: Each seat in the coach has Entertainment TV set. It has 50 seating capacity.

 

  • EC , Executive chair car: Coach with spacious seats and legroom with 2+2 seating arrangement.

          It Has 56 seating capacity.

 

  • CC ,AC chair car: Coach has 3+2 seating arrangement with 73 seating capacity.

 

  • SL, Sleeper class: The most common coach in IR with 72 passenger capacity in ICF and 78 in LHB.

 

  • 2S , Second seater: Similar to CC without Air Conditioning.

 

  • UR/GS, Unreserved/General: These are least expensive coaches with no guaranteed seats. ICF has 90

          and LHB with 99 seating capacity. 

 

  • SLR, Seating cum Luggage: This coach has capacity for ladies, luggage, disabled persons and guard.

Freight Wagons

 

Freight traffic in Indian railways is a primary source of revenue. Indian Railways earned around 72% of its revenue

(about 83.5K crores) from freight traffic in 2012-13. There are various types of freight wagons. 

 

Open Wagons:

 

  • BOX, High-sided Bogie Open wagons with side discharge arrangement for loading of Coal and other bulk traffic.

 

  • BOY (Low sided Bogie Open wagons to load Iron Ore) and BOBS & BOBX (Bogie Open hopper wagons with

          bottom discharge arrangement to carry ballast, ores, etc.)

 

  • BFR / BRH (Bogie flat wagon)

 

  • BFU (Bogie flat well type wagon)

 

  • BLCA & BLCB Bogie Low Platform Container wagons.

 

Covered Wagons:

 

  • BCN/BCNA (Special type bogie covered wagon with higher CC and air brake

 

  • BCCN Double Decker Bogie Covered wagon for loading of automobile cars

 

Tank Wagons:

 

  • BTPN (Bogie Tank wagons for loading of Petrol, Naphtha & other Petroleum products)

 

  • TK (Tank wagon for kerosene loading),TG (Tank wagon suitable for bulk transportation of LPG)

 

Special Purpose Wagons:

 

  • Milk wagon: The Horizontal Cylindrical insulated Rail Milk tanker of 40,000 litres capacity is suitable for transportation of chilled milk at 4 degree Celsius. The inside barrel is made of stainless steel and allows carrying of dairy milk without any contamination. The outside barrel is insulated thereby making the tanker safe for carrying chilled milk at high speed even attached to passenger trains.

 

  • Military consignments wagons

 

  • Aluminium & Cement wagons: These wagons are provided with two chambers at the bottom for discharge of the load by means of air fluidising system.
